Treatment and Prevention
Stages of Care
It is important to understand the three stages of chiropractic care. Chiropractic addresses core physiological and biomechanical aspects of the body, therefore resolution of your problem may take time and effort on behalf of both the Chiropractor and yourself. Some conditions can be treated in a few visits, while others may take longer.
Generally speaking, the longer you've had the problem, the longer it takes for your body to respond and heal. This is why early detection and care is the key! The following is a brief summary of the three major phases of chiropractic care and they run as a continuum.
Relief Care (First Stage)
The majority of patients consult a chiropractor because they have an ache or pain. In the first phase of care, the main objective is to eliminate or reduce your discomfort and stabilize your condition in the shortest amount of time.
The number of times you visit a chiropractor during this phase of care varies and is dependent upon your specific condition but generally visits are more frequent in this phase.
Rehabilitative Care (Second Stage)
Once your condition has entered a stage of pain relief, you enter the second phase of care, where the objective is to correct or address any underlying injury or cause of your problem. This phase aims to strengthen the muscles and improve joint and nerve function. The frequency of visits begins to reduce and rehabilitation exercises are introduced. We teach you how to counter any daily physical stress that may be related to your problem thereby continuing and promoting good spinal strength, endurance and balance.
It is important to remember that many of the conditions for which people seek care have developed over many years therefore correcting these problems is a true rehabilitative process. It is also important to understand that it takes time to implement long term changes, therefore if you end your care when the pain has reduced but before full healing of the muscles and soft tissues has occurred, you can invite a relapse. This is a mistake some people make and can lead to recurring problems.
Maintenance Care (Third stage)
This phase is designed to maintain your improved health, encourage normal spinal function and prevent the return of the original problem. A good way to look at chiropractic maintenance care is to relate it to dentistry. We all know it takes a long time to develop tooth decay, but with regular maintenance and check-ups, the plaque doesn't have a chance. Similarly, it often takes a long time to develop a spinal imbalance, but with regular check-ups the spinal joints may maintain greater flexibility and balance. Another analogy is again to think of your car. It takes time and effort to maintain but with regular MOTs and servicing it is less likely to breakdown in the future. That's why we will recommend a regular schedule of chiropractic check-ups for you.
