SPORTS THERAPY AND REHABILITATION

Family & History

Most of my life has been spent in South Devon with a bit of surf travel thrown in, and studying for a degree in Sports Science at Coventry University. I now live in Denbury with my partner Kate, and our three girls.

Much of my time is spent running after my two littlest girls (they're seriously fast) with the remainder studying movement and massage text books.  I've always had a real affinity for the sea, and although I’ll concede that Denbury is not quite the beach, I do escape for the odd morning to Bantham or Cornwall for a sneaky surf.

Food is also important to me, both professionally and personally, and I believe it is one of the most misrepresented and central issues to our collective future and health.

Why do I do it?

I started my "career" as a lifeguard, but was soon teaching swimming and working in the gym. I'm not really sure why I did it, perhaps it was the people I worked with, or my natural inclination to mechanics and love of sport, but whatever it was I kept getting deeper into studying the subject.

On completion of my degree, and finding it didn't have much to offer in the practical realm, I took some seminars by an American called Paul Chek. This was a kind of turning point for me as at last I had found someone who began to fill the gaping void between the theory and practice of fitness and movement training. Perhaps more importantly Paul is a man who walks his talk, which up until this point had been rather lacking in my experience in the world of fitness.

The inspiration provided by Paul and many more since, has led me on a journey of constant questioning and seeking to improve my knowledge and practical skills, and eventually led me to learning the massage skills that now powerfully complement what I do as an exercise professional.

Inspiration & Surfing

I feel at may best when I move - I naturally understand movement. To me the body is not something from a text book, but endless complexity with hidden intricacies that through the coaching and treatment process become a more complete picture, until a workable solution is reached. In everyone there is always the potential for improvement - this is what I consider the essence of the coaching process, to uncover possibilities and nurturing them into reality.

Health, function and performance come when a critical mass of factors are present, and the better the alignment of these factors (for example your posture) the better you are able to express your potential in that realm. Pain, dysfunction and disease manifest when you drop below this threshold, or an injury forces you there.

I'm thoroughly enjoying the process of learning and applying different disciplines to a single, cohesive model that I believe is much more powerful than its individual parts. In the health and fitness world we seem to be in a very exciting time, with many professionals and teachers exploring diverse topics and fusing them into a better, more whole understanding or how we as humans function and excel.

Right now I'm putting my practical energies into developing my bodywork skills and applying my knowledge of the body and movement to my massage practice. Uniquely, I can integrate corrective exercise techniques into my massage sessions to add another dimension of effectiveness, and empower my clients to work on themselves at home.

Perhaps the peak of this is my project to apply these principles my own surfing, and a small team of top UK surfers who I work with. My aim is to use this platform to develop the best programme that is available anywhere for surf fitness.
