What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a regulated healthcare profession in which, chiropractors must undergo a minimum of four years full time education and training to enable them to diagnose, treat and help in the prevention of biomechanical disorders of the neuro-musculoskeletal system, particularly those involving the spine.
These biomechanical disorders or imbalances can have many causes. They can be the result of sports injuries, falls, and road traffic accidents or occur over many years with an accumulation of prolonged poor postures or lifestyle. The latter includes factors such as physical, mental and emotional stress, poor diet, lack of exercise and unbalanced repetitive movements. Some people also routinely consult chiropractors for a checkup before any symptoms have occurred understanding that a balanced, well functioning body is more likely to perform at its optimum and be more resilient to injury or problems.
Loss of normal function and balance of the spinal bones can cause irritation and inflammation of the spinal joints and result in compression of the nerves that exit between the spinal vertebrae. These nerves monitor and control every organ, muscle and joint in the body and therefore compression can result not only in severe pain but also, changes to the function of muscles and other joints before any pain occurs. A simple comparison would be that the effects of these imbalances are similar to losing the normal alignment or tracking of the wheels on your car leading to early wear and tear of the tyres and inefficient running of the car.
Chiropractors use subtle and skilled movements to restore normal function within the spinal joints with the aim of providing pain relief and improved joint and nerve function. This can result in an increase in mobility, relief of muscle spasm, pain or discomfort.
An important part of chiropractic management is to ensure that once optimum relief and function is achieved, regular checkups will be recommended so as to detect possible regression and prevent future or continuing problems. These recommendations will be related to the history or cause of your symptoms and present lifestyle. After all, the pain is not the problem it is the result of the problem. We happily service our cars regularly to prevent breakdown and ensure optimum performance, so why not our bodies? Chiropractic does not involve the use of any drugs or surgery.
